American Idioms

Idiom merupakan suatu tata bahasa yang mempunyai arti tersendiri. Berikut ini penulis paparkan beberapa contoh American Idiom yang umum digunakan :-D :

# take the law into one's own hand
artinya :main hakim sendiri
eq : The angry mob tried to take the law into its own hands

# laugh in one's sleeve (laugh up one's sleeve)
artinya :menertawakan dalam hati
eq:We laugh up our sleeves, when she began to sing

# lay down one's life
artinya :mengorbankan jiwa raga seseorang
eq:Many patriots lay down their lives for their country


# lead a dog's life
artinya :mengalami keadaan yang tidak menyenangkan / hidup menderita
eq:He is leading a dog's life working for Mr.Gray



# lead by the nose
artinya :dikuasai, mudah dipengaruhi
eq: I'm pity with Norman, his wife leads him by the nose

# eat out of house and home
artinya :makan banyak sekali
eq:The way those boys consume food, they will eat us out of house anda home



# like a fish out of water
artinya :merasa tak berdaya
eq: Among so many strangers, we felt like a fish out of water

# let the cat out of the bag
artinya :membuka rahasia dengan tidak sengaja
eq:No one knew that we were married, until she, let the cat out of the bag

# look for a needle in a haystock
artinya : mencari suatu benda kecil di daerah yang luas
eq:Searching for a missing coin on the beach, is like looking for a needle in a haystock

# under the weather
artinya :sakit
eq:She has been under the weather since last Wednesday

# get in one's hair
artinya :menjengkelkan,menyakitkan hati
eq:Her childish behavior gets in my hair
